You stated that the island (Zealand), on which Copenhagen resides is the rootname for New Zealand. New Zealand (Nieuw-Zeeland) was discovered by Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer.

    From Wikipedia:
“Despite their identical names, the island is not connected historically to the Pacific nation of New Zealand, which is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland.”
